Essential Medical Consumables Every Kenyan Clinic Should Stock

15 April 2026Β·Pawad Editorial

Running a primary care clinic in Kenya requires meticulous supply chain management. Consumables run out fast, and a stockout of even a basic item like a 5 ml syringe can disrupt dozens of patient interactions in a single day. Understanding which items are truly essential β€” and at what par levels β€” is the first step toward a well-functioning facility.

The Ministry of Health’s Kenya Essential Medicines List (KEML) provides the pharmaceutical baseline, but consumables sit in an equally critical category. Every clinic should maintain stock of: disposable syringes (2 ml, 5 ml, 10 ml), hypodermic needles (21G, 23G, 25G), IV cannulas (18G, 20G, 22G), IV giving sets, cotton wool rolls, surgical spirit, antiseptic solution (chlorhexidine or iodine), wound dressing packs, examination gloves (both nitrile and latex), and urinary catheters (Foley). These form the daily backbone of clinical operations.

Procurement discipline matters as much as having a list. Rotating stock on a FIFO (first in, first out) basis prevents expiry losses. For sterile items, check packaging integrity on every delivery β€” a compromised pouch is as dangerous as no pouch at all. Institutions serving more than 50 patients per day should consider a vendor-managed inventory arrangement with their supplier to ensure just-in-time restocking without overstocking on shelf space.

At Pawad, we supply the full range of medical consumables to clinics across Kenya. Whether you need a monthly supply arrangement or a one-off top-up, contact our trade team at trade@pawadmedical.co.ke. We can also put together a custom consumables starter kit for new clinics opening their doors.
