How to Choose the Right Blood Pressure Monitor for Your Facility

2 April 2026ยทPawad Editorial

Blood pressure monitoring is one of the most frequently performed clinical procedures in Kenya, yet the choice of device is often an afterthought. Aneroid sphygmomanometers remain the standard in formal clinical settings where trained staff are available โ€” their accuracy is high when correctly calibrated, and they carry no batteries or charging requirements. The major downside: they require a stethoscope and auscultatory skill, and drift out of calibration over time without regular checking.

Digital upper-arm monitors have become increasingly viable for outpatient clinics and community health centres. Devices from validated manufacturers such as Omron, Microlife, and A&D meet AAMI/ESH validation protocols and are safe for most adult patients. The oscillometric method they use avoids observer bias and does not require a stethoscope. For high-volume outpatient settings in Kenya where nurses are managing queues, an automated upper-arm device can significantly increase throughput.

Digital wrist monitors are generally not recommended for clinical use. They are sensitive to wrist position and arm movement, leading to unreliable readings, particularly in elderly or obese patients. They are best reserved for self-monitoring at home by compliant patients who have already had their technique verified by a clinician.

Whatever device you choose, consider cuff sizing. An incorrectly sized cuff is the most common cause of inaccurate readings. Stock at least three cuff sizes: standard adult (arm circumference 22โ€“32 cm), large adult (32โ€“42 cm), and paediatric. Pawad stocks a range of validated BP monitors and replacement cuffs โ€” contact us for institutional pricing.
